N8 – video preview of Nokia’s most anticipated mobile of 2010
With iPhone and Android smartphones treading ruthlessly on Symbian to shoot ahead, ‘N8’ is Nokia’s adrenaline dose that aims at restoring it to the position it enjoyed before Apple spoiled the Finnish giant’s plot. Symbian^3 is the latest iteration of Nokia’s preferred operating system and N8 would be Nokia’s first phone flaunting the brand new OS. Needless to say, Nokia has put a lot of eggs in the basket: N8 boasts of splendid looks, a whopping 12MP camera with Xenon flash as well as 720p video recording with autofocus, capacitive touch AMOLED, 3.5mm headset jack, TV-out, 16GB internal memory and unique features like USB on-the-go. Now Nokia is swinging around this basket of eggs. Yesterday, a video appeared, showing the USB on-the-go capabilities. Today, Nokia officially launched the first of the three-part series of video showcasing the abilities of the N8.

Chris Bennetts, Nokia’s Senior Product Manager guides you through the seven-minute long walkthrough, showing the UI of the new Symbian^3. While the features are a first on Symbian, we can’t help but notice that they are simply what other smartphones have offered for a while now. Homescreens, widgets, threaded text messages.. we have seen it all! But the Symbian^3 does have its merits. The browsing experience, for example, although ordinary, supports Flash, and from the looks of it, does not show any lag – sorry Mr. Jobs. We are of the opinion that the multitasking abilities of the Symbian are still the best (waiting for iPhone OS 4.0 to show its mettle). Symbian^3 just bulds upon that strength by offering Windows 7-like snapshots of running apps. The OVI maps is one of the superior navigation softwares in the market. The capacitive touch seems to be responsive and UI is smooth. There are no jitters or lags that infected the previous Symbian versions, but we’d like to test its mettle by loading it to the brim and then checking for lag. As you know, we are ruthless!
