Oppo Mobiles is set to introduce a new camera technology at Mobile World Congres on February 27. The company has started sending out media invite for the launch where it will announce new technology dubbed '5x' in the poster. There are no details whether Oppo will launch a new smartphone with this technology.
The invite reads its new camera technology "will give users unprecedented ability to capture highly detailed images." At MWC 2014, Oppo unveiled its VOOC Flash charge technology and last year showcased new developments. Oppo's 5x technology does hint at introduction of 5x optical zoom on mobile devices.
Optical zoom on smartphones is not a new trend. Asus already sells its Zoom lineup with optical zoom and Apple recently introduced 2x optical zoom with iPhone 7 Plus. It will be interesting to see how Oppo implements the technology and whether it becomes available on a smartphone rightaway.
"OPPO's relentless pursuit of perfection without compromise has given birth to a remarkable technological breakthrough that will change how the world perceives smartphone photography," Sky Li, VP, OPPO, MD of International Mobile Business & President of OPPO India said about the new technology.
Oppo has gained significant market share in its home market with focus on smartphone imaging technology. According to IDC, Oppo has 16.8 percent market share in Chinese smartphone market and its R9 smartphone has dethroned iPhone 6s as the best-selling smartphone.
"We chose MWC to unveil the '5x' technology with the belief that we can inspire the industry to aim higher, and continue to create pioneering products that give amazing experiences to consumers," Sky Li added.
