Mozilla has created a new website that allows users to send and receive files in through encrypted channels. The company is calling the system “Send”, which is pretty much all it does. You drag and drop a file onto the browser and it is encrypted and uploaded to the cloud. The website then gives you a link that can be shared with your friends etc. Clicking on this link directs them to Mozilla Send, presenting a Download button.
The links are preserved for 24 hours, but the files will disappear from the web as soon as they are downloaded. This though presents a problem when sharing files with multiple people. You will need different links for each of them, since the files expire the minute they’re downloaded. On the other hand, sharing a file through encrypted channels can be quite useful for a many people. Mozilla says it has no access to the file that you’re uploading either. Send will work on any "modern browser" says Mozilla, so Chrome, Safari and Edge should be covered.
Further, Mozilla Send allows you to send files up to 1GB. Of course, the time taken to upload them will depend on your own network speeds as well. Send is only an experiment right now, so it’s possible that Mozilla will shut down the website in future. That said, the company may also weave the website into a whole new app for smartphones. If it does, it’ll be a simple and nifty app to have indeed.
