Motorola launched the first Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 smartphone, Edge X30, late last year and a company executive has now teased a special edition of the phone that comes with an under-display camera.
Pictures of the box of this upcoming Moto Edge X30 Under-Screen Camera Edition were shared on Weibo by Chen Jin, General Manager of Lenovo’s China Mobile Phone Business.
Under-display cameras have been used on phones before and they are progressively getting better (and less distracting). Such phones use a low-resolution area of screen above the selfie camera sensor or use smaller pixels in this area in order to allow light to pass through to the selfie camera.
The image quality naturally takes a hit, but we have still come a long way since the first under-display camera phone( ZTE Axon 20) debuted in 2020.
Samsung is expected to stick to under-display cameras for its foldable. Trade pundits forecast that we will be seeing a lot more of such under-display selfie cameras in the second half of 2022 and from a number of popular brands including Realme, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo.

The specifications of the special edition phone are expected to be similar to the original global variant.
The regular Edge X30 brandishes a 10-bit 6.7-inch OLED display (1080 x 2400 pixels) that’s HDR10+ compliant and supports a 144Hz refresh rate. The SoC is Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and it’s paired with up to 256GB UFS 3.1 storage and up to 12GB RAM.
Even on the under-display camera edition, the selfie camera is touted to be a 60MP sensor. The triple rear camera system is expected to remain the same – a 50MP primary camera, paired with a 50MP wide-angle shooter and a basic 2MP depth sensor. Other expected features include stereo speakers, 5000mAh battery with 68W fast charging, side-mounted fingerprint sensor and Android 12 software.
