Motorola Mobility India has shut down its India specific product website. This is a part of Motorola’s global downsizing process. If you happen to head to the Motorola Mobility India’s website, a simple message now reads:
“We are streamlining our business and support systems, and unfortunately, we'll no longer have a dedicated website for India. Your local support site will remain open well into the future, and we'll continue to provide support for our existing products. If you are interested in viewing our current products, you can still do so here.” Clicking on the last link will take you to the U.S. website.
Motorola had made it clear back in August 2012 that it will be streamlining its global operations. The company had said that they will reduce workforce by 30% and shut down a third of its offices globally. The roadmap also included exiting all unprofitable markets, focus on quality and not quantity of phones they sell and exit the budget Android segment completely.
Google acquired Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion in May this year, on the back of heavy losses last year. Motorola Mobility is totally independent from Motorola Solutions. Incidentally, Motorola’s plan that it will aggressively compete with the rival Android manufacturers for phones’, including the Nexus range, is not turning out as well as it had hoped.
One of the implications of this move would be that we would not see any new handsets from Motorola in the near future, for starters. Whatever handsets are available in the markets will be sold, but no fresh stocks will replenish the shelves.
Note: Service centres will remain open “well into the future” according to Motorola.
We cannot really understand what sort of timelines Motorola is hinting at, and surely it isn’t indefinite. We would recommend not picking up Motorola phones now, if you are in the market for a new Android device. As for those of you who already own Motorola, keep your fingers crossed. And save some money and switch the moment you get the chance.
