Motorola might not be able to sell its smartphones in the US owing to a lawsuit by Sony Ericson.
The lawsuit claimed that Moto G, Edge, and Razr phone lines infringe on its patented 5G technology.
This could result in a nationwide ban on Motorola phone imports in the US.
Motorola has had a good 2024 with its great lineup of smartphones that it had to offer. However, legal trouble is approaching the company and it could face a ban on its smartphones in the US market. The company is dealing with a copyright infringement lawsuit.
Motorola might not be able to sell its smartphones in the US in the future owing to a lawsuit by another company. The lawsuit was filed by Sony Ericson and it claimed that Motorola’s Moto G, Edge, and Razr phone lines infringe on its patented 5G technology. The US International Trade Commission (ITC) recently made a ruling in favour of Sony Ericsson pertaining to this patent dispute.
If the court upholds this order when it will be heard again in April 2025, then this could result in a nationwide ban on Motorola phone imports in the US. Lenovo will likely appeal the ruling. However, the problem doesn’t end here. The legal battle moves beyond the US. As per a Reuters report, Motorola and Sony Ericsson are also entangled in similar lawsuits in South America, the United Kingdom, and North Carolina. Things aren’t looking the best for Motorola as Sony Ericsson has already secured early victories in Brazil and Colombia.
This might come as a crisis to the top management at Motorola as it comes at a time when the smartphone maker is currently in the process of expanding its folio. Its recent releases include the budget-friendly Moto G 5G and the innovative Motorola Plus 2024 foldable phone, both of which have garnered positive attention. If a ban were to take place, U.S. consumers could lose access to these affordable, AI-capable devices, a key segment of Motorola’s appeal. The US is also a key market for Motorola.
