Riding high on the success of Moto G, Motorola has managed to surpass Nokia to become the fourth-largest smartphone seller in India in the second quarter of this year, according to analysis company Canalys.
According to Canalys, Motorola had shipped a whopping 955,650 smartphones in the said quarter, while Nokia shipped 633,720. Interestingly, Nokia had led with 583,160 shipments while Motorola shipped 379,310 units. In the first half, Motorola sold 1.33 million smartphones, surpassing Nokia's 1.21 million.
As anyone can guess, Motorola's grand return to the smartphone business is driven by the popular Moto G. While the budget smartphone raked up huge number in India, the company came out with another aggressively priced handset – Moto E – that helped further push sales. Recently, Motorola slashed price of its Moto G by Rs. 2,000.
Though it is behind the likes of Samsung, Micromax and Karbonn, Motorola's success in such a brief period of time clearly indicates changing dynamics in the Indian smartphone market. Selling high spec'd devices at affordable price has evidently been the main reason behind Motorola's success. And of late we've seen companies such as Asus, Micromax and Xiaomi following the same model with devices such as Zenfone 5, Unite 2 and Mi 3.
