Motorola and Verizon to unveil new Droids on October 27
HIGHLIGHTS

The Droid Turbo 2 is expected to be announced alongside the Droid Maxx 2, believed to be a re-branded Moto X Play

After weeks of speculation, Motorola and Verizon have sent out press invites for a launch event on October 27th in New York. The invite suggests that there will be more than one Droid phone in the offing. Rumours indicate that the Droid Turbo 2 and the Droid Maxx 2 will be unveiled at the event. The tagline reads, “Everything you expect from a phone will change.”

The invite mentions the unveiling of the “newest Droids”. One of the devices is expected to be the Droid Turbo 2. Several leaks have suggested that it will be an entirely new device, and may be marketed outside the US as the Moto X Force. It will be a Verizon exclusive in the US. The other smartphone tipped to make an appearance at the event is the Droid Maxx 2. Rumours suggest that it is a re-branded Moto X Play. In India, Motorola Droid phones are sold under the Moto brand.

The Droid Turbo 2 features the much talked about “shatterproof” POLED display, reinforced with metallic edges. The shattering glass graphic on the press invite may be hinting at that too. The 5.43-inch display is expected to have a QHD resolution. The device is said to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC and 3GB of RAM. It will come with a 21-megapixel primary camera, 5-megapixel secondary front camera, and a large 3,760mAh battery. The phone will be available in 32GB and 64GB variants. The phone is also expected to launch with the Moto Maker customisation feature. Users will also be entitled to a one time free replacement of the design within 2 years of purchase.

The Droid Maxx 2 is supposed to be a variant of the Moto X Play, that was launched in India last month. The Moto X Play features a 5.5-inch FHD display and is powered by a 1.7GHz octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor and 2GB of RAM. It also has a 21-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera, along with a 3,630mAh battery. It boots Android Lollipop v5.1.1 out-of-the-box.

While rumours suggest a price tag of $628 (Rs. 41,500 approx.) for the Moto X Force, it is expected to be available under contract from Verizon for much less. The Moto X Play starts from Rs. 18,499 in India.
