The design somewhat resembles the original Moto X, but is distinctly Lenovo from the rear.
Moto has recently been very active with its smartphone launches, with the company scheduled to unveil the Moto Z in India by early next month, and the recent launches of Moto G Play and Moto E Power. Keeping in line with these launches, the Lenovo-owned company seems to have yet another smartphone ready for launch – the Moto M, if leaks are to be believed.
According to the leaks, the Moto M is possibly the first Moto smartphone to house the fingerprint scanner on the rear panel, in contrast to the front fingerprint scanner of the Moto Z and Moto G4 Plus. The device’s front panel design is also very similar to the original Moto X, although the rear is completely uncharacteristic of Moto devices till now. Reports suggest that the Moto M is being made by Lenovo, and not Moto, in which case the change in design policy is quite evident. Other sources state that the device may be unveiled in two variants – like ‘Plus’ or ‘Mini’.
Leaked by TechDroider, the leaked images show the phone running on Android Marshmallow, alongside housing 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, 16MP/8MP cameras and a Full HD display. The Moto M may run on a MediaTek processor, from what we have seen in previous leaks, and all of these combine to make the Moto M a mid-range smartphone, possibly ranked just above the Moto G4 Play in the market.
The Moto M is reportedly being made for the Asian markets, and it remains to be seen if it is launched in India. Long term Moto users may not be entirely pleased with the rather generic looks of the Moto M, but Lenovo may have new audience groups in mind with this device.
