After the Galaxy Note 7, mid range phones may get Iris scanner when costs are controllable

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note 7 earlier this week on Tuesday, 2nd August with a number of upgrades, but what really makes it stand out in Samsung’s lineup is its Iris scanner. This piece of technology aims to make the device more secure by using your eye as the key to unlocking it. Samsung mobile division president  Mr. D J Koh has now revealed that this feature might be seen in mid-range Samsung smartphones in the future.

Speaking to ZDNet, Koh said that with repeated cost reduction, the Iris scanner might come down to mid-range handsets. According to him, the technology took almost 3 years to develop and the end result is one of the most secure biometric security systems being used. Bringing it to mid range phone is currently only limited by the cost, and once that becomes controllable, we might see an increasing number of phones from Samsung with this feature.

Koh also mentioned that Samsung is working with banks around the world to take the use of Iris scanning further beyond just unlocking the phone, and implement it for identity verification in various use cases. They want it to be used by other third-party apps as well. The scanner even works for people with glasses on, so no worries there.

Android has always had  concerns when it comes to security, while the same cannot be said for Apple. Samsung seems to be on the lookout to change that, with previously having implemented its own mobile security platform Knox and fingerprint authorization from the Galaxy S5 onwards. It is no secret that Samsung often sets trends across the Android smartphone market and we are definitely anticipating more phones with Iris scanners built in.
