Microsoft updates Outlook for iOS, Android with Interesting Calendars, Skype integration and more
HIGHLIGHTS

Some of the features are from the Sunrise app that Microsoft acquired last year.

Microsoft has announced that it is updating Outlook for iOS and Android devices. The new update adds a number of new features to the calendar, including those from the Sunrise app (which Microsoft acquired last year). In its official blog, Microsoft’s Javier Soltero states, “the Outlook team’s mission is to provide you with the best calendar app out there. Today, we’re happy to share that it’s about to get even better on iOS and Android—with new features and a better overall experience to help you manage and make the most of your day.”

The Interesting Calendars feature will allow users to subscribe to sports teams’ calendars, and see the event appear on their calendar. This feature will soon expand to other categories such as TV shows. Interesting Calendars is currently only available to iOS users with an Office 365 email address, and will be coming to Android users soon.

Another feature that the company added is Event Icons. The next time you type terms like “coffee” or “lunch,” an appropriate icon will be added to the event tile. These are aimed at letting users scan through their calendar and quickly see what events are coming up.

The calendar will also let users add a map to an an event. When users add a location to an event, they will see suggestions, and selecting one of them will add a map. Later, this map can be used to get directions to that location. Further, the new update also changes the date and time pickers, to make scheduling easier. The new pickers are currently available for iOS, and will be added to Android soon.

The new update also adds the ability to edit recurring meetings. When making changes to such a meeting, Outlook will confirm if they wish to apply the changes to an individual instance, or all meetings in the series. Users will also be able to add a Skype meeting to an event. Tapping the Skype meeting toggle will let Outlook add the company’s Skype information to the event’s description. When the meeting starts, users will be able to join an event by tapping it.
