Microsoft adding 4G capability to select Lumia phones, via OTA
HIGHLIGHTS

Microsoft india rolling out a new OTA for select devices, enabling their 4G support.

Microsoft, has started rolling out firmware updates to select Lumia devices, adding 4G capability to them. The company had earlier, in earlier conversations with Digit, maintained that Lumia devices do support 4G, but the company will unlock them at an approapriate time. This new update will enable these phones to use their 4G capabilities. All these phones were 4G capable from the beginning but were locked on the software side as 4G in India was (and still is) on a small scale only. It is to be noted that this update only supports FDD-LTE (1,800 MHz) band but not the TDD-LTE (2,300 MHz) band.

The phones that have made the list are as follows:

  • Lumia 1520
  • Lumia 1320
  • Lumia 930
  • Lumia 920
  • Lumia 925
  • Lumia 830
  • Lumia 625

If you own one of these devices and have received the update then you can check the mobile data setting on your phone to use 4G connectivity. While it is not known yet, more phones may be getting the update in coming weeks.

Recently, Microsoft downsized employees, to the tune of $7.6 billion, in order to write-off its Nokia deal. However, company head Satya Nadella in a exclusive interview with ZDNet revealed that the company has no plans to backout from the business and is very much in it for the long term. While the company is focusing on its core services and software, Nadella did agree that the mobile form factor is important. However, It might not remain a priority and the company is going to rely on hardware partners to manufacture new products. Nadella also mentioned that if nobody will make Windows phones, they will make them themselves.

Currently, the software giant is gearing up for the launch of its Windows 10 operating system. This is going to be the biggest launch in Windows’ history as the upcoming Windows 10 will cover many devices and various form factors under a single operating system. The new Windows 10 might bring some parity in terms of app support compared to other operating systems in the category. For the new operating system, developers will be able to port their apps developed for other platforms like iOS and Android, directly to Windows. Microsoft claims, this will ensure better and more number of apps in the Windows app store.
