Micromax to launch CyanogenMod powered smartphone soon?
Reports on the XDA Forums suggest that Micromax is working with CyanogenMod for bringing device(s) powered by its custom ROMs.
Homegrown smartphone maker Micromax’s ambitions have been growing for a while now. After taking its business beyond the country borders and partnering with Google for Android One, the company is now reportedly collaborating with custom Android ROM maker CyanogenMod (CM). The aim is of course to offer CM-powered smartphones in India.
CM is amongst the most popular Android-based ROMs available today. The company had earlier collaborated with Oppo to bring the Oppo N1 with a CM ROM. In addition, the much acclaimed OnePlus One smartphone also runs on a custom ROM by CyanogenMod. In fact, the OnePlus One has its own OS version, known as CyanogenMod 11S.
The report had originally come through the XDA Developers forum, but no confirmation has been received about it yet.
In related news, there were also reports earlier that Google had tried to acquire CyanogenMod some time back. CM CEO Kirt McMaster though refused the offer made by the search giant. CyanogenMod used to be an independent ROM maker, before becoming a company last year.
Micromax is amongst the leading smartphone makers in India, even claiming recently that it had overtaken Samsung Electronics to become the leading seller in the country. These claims were refuted by other reports though, but Micromax remains one of the biggest smartphone vendors in India.
