MediaTek has unveiled its new fast charging technology called Pump Express 3.0. The company claims that this is it's fastest battery charging technology to date, and is capable of charging a battery from 0% to 70% in 20 minutes. Further, the company says that this is the first solution in the world to enable direct charging through USB Type-C. This system bypasses the charging circuitry inside the phone and directly charges the battery from the adaptor. The company says that it has more than 20 safety and device protection systems in place to ensure that neither the phone, nor the charger overheat. Pump Express 3.0 technology will be available in the MediaTek Helio P20 chipsets, which are expected to be in the market by the end of this year.

Jeffrey Ju, MediaTek’s Executive Vice President and Co-Chief Operating Officer stated, “the engineering challenge in the smartphone world today is satisfying consumer demand for powerful, rich multimedia features without needing to plug in their phones all day long. Our technology lets consumers power up quickly to stay connected, on the go and using their favorite applications whether for work or play instead of tethered to an outlet.”

The introduction of Pump Express 3.0 should help MediaTek better compete with Qualcomm, which has its own fast charging technology in the form of Quick Charge. The latest iteration of the technology, Quick Charge 3.0, is available on chipsets such as the Snapdragon 820
