On October 11, 2022, the Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek announced the Dimensity 1080, a new addition to the Dimensity line of smartphone processors. It comes as the successor to the Dimensity 920 released last year and offers better performance and camera features. The chipset should be seen in mid-tier smartphones by the end of this year. Here is everything that you need to know about the MediaTek Dimensity 1080.
Compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 1080 chip has a faster processing and graphics unit. At its core, the chipset has two ARM Cortex-A78 cores that can go up to 2.6GHz. Further, there is a power-optimized ARM Mali-G68 GPU. The chipset also supports LPDDR5 memory and USF 3.1 storage. To top that, the chip is designed on a 6nm architecture, making it more power-efficient than the Dimensity 920.
The image signal processor on the Dimensity 1080 supports up to 200MP primary camera and features a hardware-accelerated 4K HDR recording engine. A multi-core AI processing unit also allows the chipset to perform certain tricks, such as applying a soft background blur and selective focus from a single camera. In terms of display, the processor can handle an FHD+ display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Last but not least, Dimensity 1080 supports sub-6GHz 5G connectivity and Wi-Fi 6. All these upgrades make the Dimensity 1080 a decent option for smartphones priced between Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 30,000.
Upon the launch of the Dimensity 1080, Ch Chen, Deputy General Manager of the Wireless Communications Business Unit at MediaTek, says, “Continuing MediaTek’s legacy of optimizing power and performance, the Dimensity 1080 offers a full suite of advanced features that challenge expectations about what a 5G smartphone can do. This new chipset is designed to enhance many functions that made its predecessor great, including processing power, camera, and video quality, and time to market for manufacturers.
