After announcing its 64-bit octa core processors last year, Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek could be working on processors with 10 or 12 cores. A Chinese blog claimed yesterday that MediaTek is currently looking into 8-core CPU solutions and could venture their research into 10 and 12 core CPU territory.
The blog also says that the new SoC with 10 or more CPU cores might come before the end of this year. It is expected that MediaTek will work on its new chips with the same core-pilot technology it has deployed on its 64-bit octa core processors. It is notable that the 64-bit MT6700 series octa-core SoC is still not out and will be available in smartphones this year.
On the other hand, mobile chipmaker Qualcomm is already out with its 64-bit chips which are available in many devices like the new Micromax Yureka and the HTC Desire 820. Mediatek is famous for its low-cost chips, therefore if and when MediaTek comes out with 10 or 12 core chips, they will probably be meant for budget devices.
