LG’s Nuclun 2 chipset might power the next LG V10

LG’s Nuclun 2 chipset might power the next LG V10
HIGHLIGHTS

LG’s Nuclun 2 SoC is likely to power the second generation of LG V10, which may be launched around the second half of 2016.

LG is apparently giving its custom chipset idea a second look and if rumours are to be believed, it will come out with the Nuclun 2 by second half of next year. The custom SoC is the second attempt from LG and is apparently aimed at the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC. The latest rumors surrounding the upcoming SoC suggest that it will power the next variant of the LG V10. It was earlier suggested that LG might put the Nuclun 2 in its upcoming flagship, the LG G5.

The second generation of this Nuclun chipset was earlier seen in August in a leaked Geekbench benchmark, where it performed slightly better than the Samsung Galaxy S6 which is powered by Exynos 7420. In the leaked geekbench scores, the Nuclun 2 apparently scored 5392 points in comparison to the 4970 points scored by the Samsung Galaxy S6. Word is that the chipset will be manufactured using TSMC’s 16nm process. The CPU is supposed to have two core clusters, one of Cortex A-72 cores and the other cluster of Cortex A-52 one's. They are likely to be working together in a big.LITTLE architecture. Previously, it was also rumoured that LG might manufacture the Nuclun chip using Intel’s 14nm technology.

The Nuclun 2 is also suggested to offer better performance than Huawei’s Kirin 950 SoC. The leakster pointed out that LG is also developing the third version of the SoC which is likely to be as powerful as the Exynos 8890 (which Samsung recently unveiled and is likely to power the Samsung Galaxy S7). Rumours suggest LG will come out with the Nuclun 2 by the second half of next year and the Nuclun 3 much after that.

In the meantime, LG is gearing up to launch the LG G5 next year, which is likely to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC. The phone is expected to launch in Q1, 2016 but if it will offer a 4K display or not is a far bigger topic of contention. With Sony pushing the boundaries in resolution with the Xperia Z5 Premium, LG is likely to follow suit with a 4K display on a phone. Apart from that, the LG G5 may also get a full metal unibody which will be a first for LG flagships.
