LG is working on a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 2560x1440 giving it a 538-ppi pixel density.
Going beyond the Retina Display, LG is working on the world’s first Quad HD-IPS LCD display for smartphones. The 5.5-inch AH-IPS display will have a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, giving it a pixel density of 538ppi. That’s four times more pixels than a conventional 720p display.
The 5.5-inch high-res Quad-HD IPS LCD display from LG is also 1.21mm thick, making it the world’s slimmest touchscreen display. LG says that the quality of output on the display will match the Blu-ray quality. The company has not released power consumption estimates, and we feel this may be the biggest drawback to the technology, probably requiring a sizable battery pack to provide sufficient juice to keep it ticking for a full day.
Dr Byeong-koo Kim, VP and head of LG Display‘s development group said, “LG Display, which pioneered the world’s first full HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology. With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market.”
The high-resolution display helps users enjoy a full view of web pages on smartphones. LG claims there will be no image distortion on the high-resolution display, even when zooming into text and images. For now, there is no information on when the new display technology will be available to the consumers.
