The LG V50 ThinQ is the company’s first 5G device and it comes with a lot of unique features. It sports a 6.4-inch QHD+ OLED FullVision display that offers a 19.5:9 aspect ratio.
The MWC hasn’t started yet but a lot of companies have already used their aces to get a lion’s share in the market. While its local competitor Samsung, and Chinese counterpart Huawei have already shown their 5G and/or foldable phones, LG is still holding its guns back and instead is offering something that very few of us would have expected. Having spent a tiring day at major launches throughout the day, we were in dire need of a good reason to be at the LG event. The South Korean company delivered what we had expected by launching two feature-laden phones: the LG G8 and the V50 ThinQ.
LG’s V-series has always been made keeping in mind the needs of content creators. However, this phone is more of a utility device and gives us a peek into the future. The phone sports a 6.4-inch QHD+ FullVision OLED display that offers a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Needless to mention that since it’s a 5G phone, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. LG doesn't want you to forget that it’s a futuristic device. Hence, it has incorporated a glowing 5G symbol on the back. There is a triple rear camera on the back panel covered in glass as LG chose to shun the matte finish this time around. The triple-camera has a 16MP Super Wide lens with an aperture of f/1.9, a 12MP standard lens and a 12MP telephoto lens. Just below the camera module is the fingerprint sensor.
On the front is a dual camera setup with an 8MP standard lens and a 5MP secondary sensor. The USP of the phone is its ability to get attached to a secondary display via an accessory. Well, this does not give it a foldable phone experience but gives you an option to carry the phone if you do not need the optional additional display, which is a 6.2-inch Full HD+ OLED FullVision panel. The phone is attached to three connector pins on the lower back of the attachment. The screens are swappable and you can use either of them for working, or use them simultaneously for multitasking without having to resize the window.
The secondary display, as it is called, can be used as a gamepad or to watch a YouTube video in a 6.4-inch display while texting on the other. The phone has a 4,000 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 technology, IP68-rated water and dust resistance and ships with Android 9.0 Pie. We wouldn’t want to comment on the expected success of the phone just yet. However, this could be a foundation to re-boost the company’s phone business. With V50 ThinQ, LG has joined the bandwagon of a few OEMs who are offering 5G phones and it seems to compete with its own meaningful innovation to lure customers. LG says the phones will start shipping soon and the price of the phone shouldn’t be a mystery for long.
