As far as smartphones are concerned, it seems like this year will be all about the display. According to a latest report by Investor, a Korean website, upcoming phones from LG V-line and Xiaomi’s next Mi Note will use curved OLED displays. The displays are being produced by LG Display, which is also hoping to supply some OLED panels to Apple this year, further confirming that the next Apple device may feature an OLED display. The report also suggests that currently, Samsung owns 95% of the smartphone OLED production and will be the main supplier for Apple.
According to the report in Investor, both Xiaomi and LG are trying to get large quantities for their upcoming phones and LG display is in the process of upping its monthly yield from 22,000 to 37,000 per month.
If the reports are true, LG will be returning with an OLED panel after a while as the last phone by LG with an OLED panel was the LG G Flex 2. Also the V-series of phones never had an OLED display in the past. On the other hand Xiaomi was already using OLED panel on its Mi Note series and the current flagship Mi Note 2 already features a 5.7-inch 1080p display.
It is also expected that LG will be launching its G6 smartphone in India soon. The phone was originally announced at MWC, and features a new tall 5.7-inch display with 2880 x 1440p resolution. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC and featuring 4GB of RAM, the phone is likely to be priced along the newly launched Samsung Galaxy S8.
