Due to low yield and other factors, Sony might not be able to ship the required camera sensor to Apple in time.
Apple's iPhone 7 is just a few months away, and the company is expected to upgrade the camera on the upcoming smartphone. Latest rumours come via barron's blog that quotes Japanese analysts from Nomura Securities. According to a Nomura official, LG will be making the initial camera sensors for Apple instead of its usual sensor provider, Sony. The analyst provides two reasons for the same, one being lower-than-expected yield of camera sensors, and secondly, Sony’s production facility being damaged in the April earthquake at Kumamoto.
Apple is expected to launch two new phones, the iPhone 7 and the 7 Plus, later this year. Both the phones are rumoured to offer OIS (optical image stabilisation) instead of just the Plus variant. There are also rumours of the new iPhones to be offered with dual-camera setups, something like what LG did with the LG G5. This has been promoted by Apple's acquisition of LinX Computational Imaging Ltd., which specialises in creating depths of field in singular photographs. The camera takes the same shot with both cameras, and combines them to create a 3D photograph with increased depth.
It is also rumored that the upcoming iPhone 7 and 7 Plus may ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack. Earlier in September 2015, Apple had also acquired a patent for foldable displays, which suggest that Apple could experiment with curved displays on its iPhones, soon. The phone is also likely to feature waterproofing, and a "new" design.
