HIGHLIGHTS

Rumours on the Internet suggest that LG is manufacturing the next generation of Nexus devices - the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 7.7. The devices are expected to be unveiled at the annual Google I/O event scheduled for May.

If the rumours currently circulating around the Internet are to be believed, the next generation Nexus devices – the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 7.7 – will be unveiled at Google’s annual I/O event, which will be held in May 2013. According to the leak, both the Nexus smartphone as well as the tablet will be co-developed by LG along with Google. LG for now has denied the rumours however, calling them “unfounded.”

In terms of specifications, the rumoured Nexus 5 from LG is expected to have a 5-inch full HD 1920×1080 display giving it a pixel density of 440ppi (pixels per inch). This is the same display size and resolution that we expect to see on Samsung’s next generation Galaxy device, the S IV. The Nexus 5 is also expected to have a 1mm thin bezel. Under the hood, the smartphone is expected to have a Nvidia Tegra 4 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and a 13 megapixel rear camera along with a 3 megapixel front-facing camera for video calls. The Nexus 5 may be priced at $299 for the 8GB storage variant. No information is available on other storage variants of the device.

The currently available Nexus 7 is manufactured by Asus. This next generation Nexus tablet will be manufactured by LG. Called the Nexus 7.7, it is expected to have a 7.7-inch WUXGA display with a resolution of 1920×1200 pixels giving it a pixel density of 294 ppi. The tablet will be powered by the Nvidia Tegra 4 processor along with 2GB of RAM. It will have a 720p HD front camera for video calls. The 8GB Nexus 7.7 will be priced at $299 for the 8GB model.

The speculated specifications of the two devices may translate to reality, as the specifications are at par with other flagship smartphones, which will be unveiled at MWC 2013.

In the past, Google has unveiled its flagship Nexus devices with a new version of the OS, so it is safe to say that we will get a taste of Key Lime Pie with the new nexus smartphone and tablet. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was unveiled with the Nexus 7, Android 4.2 was unveiled with the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10, The Galaxy Nexus brought with it Android 4.0 ICS, so on and so forth.
