Lenovo and Google to showcase Project Tango at CES on January 7
Google’s Project Tango was unveiled in 2014 and uses a device’s cameras and sensors to create 3D indoor maps
Lenovo and Google will be making an announcement regarding the latter’s 3D technology called Project Tango, on January 7 during CES. The teaser image says, “Mobile devices should see and navigate the world, the way we do.” It is possible that Lenovo will announce a consumer grade device with Google’s Project Tango technology.
For those who do not know, Google’s Project Tango uses a device’s cameras and sensors to understand its location in 3D, which can then be used to create 3D indoor maps. This technology can be used for indoor navigation for the blind, immersive gaming, and more. The technology was unveiled in 2014, and according to project leader Johnny Lee, the goal of the project is to incorporate robotics and vision-processing technology into mobile devices, and give it an understanding of space and motion. The company later unveiled the Project Tango Tablet Development Kit for developers. The tablet focused on 3D motion tracking with cameras specialising in tracking full 3D motion and depth sensors for capturing the geometry of the environment. Google claims that the device can make over a quarter million 3D measurements every second, and updates its position and orientation in real time. This data is combined into a single 3D model of the space around the user. The development kit came with a 7-inch Full HD display, and was powered by an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor with 4GB RAM. It came equipped with 128GB of storage and 4G LTE connectivity.
NASA also used the technology on its Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites, or SPHERES, which was sent to the International Space Station (ISS). The aim of SPHERES is to do the daily chores of astronauts and take care of dangerous tasks outside the space station. The robots were about the size of a soccer ball, and used small blasts of CO2 to make their way around the space station. It was also rumoured that LG was making a consumer grade tablet with Project Tango technology, which would be launched early in 2016.
