Images allegedly showing modular backplates of the upcoming Moto Z have been posted by Evan Blass, aka @evleaks, on his Twitter account. The image shows three backplates, which are reportedly called MotoMods. The one on the right is a camera grip backplate with a shutter button and a flash. It appears that this will cover the primary camera of the Moto Z, and will use its own sensor to take photos instead. The purpose of the remaining two MotoMods are not as clear. The one in the middle appears to have a kickstand, while nothing much can be discerned about the one on the left.
Last week, it was reported that Motorola was planning to phase out the Moto X brand, and replace it with the Moto Z. The report also noted that the range of backplates for the phone might include a Pico projector, stereo speakers and a camera grip with an optical zoom lens. Further, the company may launch two Moto Z devices, the Moto Z Style and the Moto Z Play, which are reportedly codenamed Vector Thin and Vertex, respectively.
Leaked images and renders of the Moto Z suggest that the device might feature a large, circular camera housing and a home button, which might double up as a fingerprint sensor. There also appears to be a connector at the back of the phone, which might be how the phone docks with the MotoMods. Last month, an unannounced Motorola smartphone tipped to be the new device was spotted on GeekBench. As per the listing, the phone is expected to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC with 4GB of RAM. The device is expected to be unveiled on June 9.
