Reports on the Internet suggest that the age old Intel MedfieldZ2460 may power the to be launched Xolo X1000 instead of the anticipated Intel Clover Trail+. But could this information be true?

Lava and Intel are set to launch a new smartphone in India on March 14th. The tech journalistic community will be taken to Goa for this grand unveiling. Intel claims that the device will be the “fastest smartphone ever”. We have put together some information that suggests what SoC the smartphone will run on.

Intel showed off its new line-up of Clover Trail processors at MWC 2013. The processors – the Z2520, the Z2560 and the Z2580 will power smartphones, which will hit store shelves in 2013. The new device from Lava and Intel is expected to launch in Q2 2013. Since Lava claims that the new smartphone in the Xolo lineup will be the fastest ever and we think it will run on the Z2580.

The Z2580 shows off a 2.0GHz dual-core processor with Hyper-Threading which keeps it in-line with quad-core processors (at least when running apps that support hyper-threading). The graphical capabilities of the smartphone will be handled by the dual PowerVR SGX 544MP2 GPU chips, which are capable of outputting a resolution of 1920×1200 pixels. The chipset is capable of handling a rear camera up to 16MP along with a front-facing 2MP camera. However, we expect that the rear camera will be an 8MP snapper or a 13MP snapper to keep it in line with what competing flagship smartphones have to offer.

Reports on the Internet suggest that the upcoming Xolo smartphone may run on the Intel Medfield Z2460 SoC clocked at 2GHz. This is the same SoC that powers the Motorola Razr i. The Razr i has been launched in the UK only and there is no information on a global release date of the smartphone. The Razr i launched in October 2012 and is powered by the 2 GHz Intel Atom Medfield Z2460 processor, 1GB of RAM and the PowerVR SGX540 GPU.

The AnTuTu Benchmark scores of the Motorola Razr i is 6175. Yesterday, we saw what is possibly the leaked benchmark scores of the Lava Xolo X1000, which is the device we think, will launch on the 14th. The score of the X1000 is 12603.

If the device which is expected to launch on the 14th ran on the Intel Atom Medfield Z2460 processor, the scores would be similar to the ones on the Razr i. A difference of nearly 6500 points is too much. An additional 1GB RAM, update to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and some optimization cannot cause the benchmark score to rise so high.

Another thing to take into consideration is that the Intel Atom Medfield Z2460 processor was launched in 2012 and can be considered a bit old when compared to the likes of the Qualcomm S4 series, which is powering smartphones including the Optimus G, Nexus 4 and more or the S4 Pro which is powering the HTC Butterfly and the Xperia Z or the S600 which is powering the HTC One. All these devices are behemoths with their raw performance. The Intel Clover Trail Z2580 is a more likely candidate to power the upcoming Lava device as it is a newer SoC and is touted to have the potential of a quad-core processor in theory thanks to its Hyper-Threading capabilities.

Nevertheless, all rumours will be put to rest in two days when the device will be unveiled on 14th March 2013 in the luscious holiday destination known as Goa.
