Latest comScore analysis reflects Apple’s increasing share in U.S.
HIGHLIGHTS

comScore’s analysis of U.S. smartphone subscribers’ market share for quarter ended June 2015 shows Apple’s growth as both platform and OEM

Apple is making more headway into its homeground – the US market. According to market research firm comScore, the company’s iOS has gained market share in the US recently, over a slight decrease in the market share owned by Google’s Android platform. While Android still remains at the top, with 51.6% of the market in June 2015, Apple’s iOS rose from 42.6% in March 2015, to 44.1% in June 2015. Android on the other hand has dropped from 52.4% in March. In addition, Windows Phone, BlackBerry’s BB OS, and Symbian make the rest of the top five, with 2.9%,1.2%, and 0.1% of the market share respectively. While Windows Phone has dropped from 3.3% in March, BB OS has also dropped from 1.6% to what it is now.

While the iOS market share may still be behind Android, Apple continued to be the biggest smartphone manufacturers in US. Being consistent leaders in the smartphone market with adopting new technology and leading sales charts, the Cupertino-based tech giant topped the chart with 44.1% of the market, followed by South Korean Samsung with 28.1%. LG, Motorola and HTC followed Apple and Samsung in the top five sellers in the US.

Looking at percentage changes in the charts, Apple is the only company among both the top five charts to present an upward curve. Apple’s iOS platform shows a 1.5% growth in user base, while Android reports a 0.8% decline. Interestingly, the growth in iOS users for the last quarter is more than BlackBerry’s entire market share itself. A parallel set of statistics published by research firm IDC, states that CyanogenMOD, the popular Android ROM, has a little more than 3% of worldwide smartphone users using it, which is more than the total number of Windows Phone and BlackBerry users worldwide. Windows Phone has a total user coverage of about 2.7%, while BlackBerry has hit a low of 0.3% users worldwide, as of quarter ended March 2015. Apple has also been leading the profit sheets with a massive margin.

The upward surge in Apple’s products come about a month ahead of the iPhone 6s launch, where Apple is also scheduled to bring out iOS 9 out of Beta, and reach an end to Apple Music’s three-month trial period. With Apple increasing its reach despite not meeting iPhone sales targets, we wait to see how the upcoming range of Apple’s products and services will further impact the market.
