HIGHLIGHTS

Certain offline retailers in the Delhi NCR have started taking pre-orders for the JioPhone ahead of the scheduled August 24 date that was announced at the Reliance AGM on July 21

The JioPhone was announced at RIL’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on July 21 and made waves with it’s aggressive pricing and free data, calling offers. The online registrations for the feature phone have been on for a while, but it seems some of the offline retailers in Delhi NCR have started taking pre-orders for the device. According to Gadgets 360, a retailer has provided details regarding the offline booking process, documents needed, delivery dates and more.

In order to book the JioPhone offline with a retailer, consumers will need to submit a copy of their Aadhar card with the offline retailer, be it a local mobile store or a Jio outlet. Consumers can only get a single mobile phone unit against one Aadhaar number across the country. So there is no benefit trying to bag another JioPhone on the same Aadhaar number across multiple outlets. The consumer’s Aadhaar number is then fed into a centralised software that will assign a token number. This token number will be required while picking up the final unit of the JioPhone.

Alternatively, consumers can also register for the JioPhone online by following this link. Those interested will need to fill out the details and will be notified as soon as there are any developments regarding the phone’s availability. The JioPhone can also be booked, using the MyJio app starting August 24. Jio announced that it will provide unlimited data (capped at 500MB per day)  and unlimited free access to Jio apps on the phone for Rs 153 per month. There is also an option of hooking up the JioPhone with any TV using a ‘Jio Phone TV-Cable’ in order to stream media from the device. For using this service though, users will need to recharge with the Rs 309 per month pack.

The JioPhone which is essentially a feature phone with some advanced capabilities such as voice commands. The phone is essentially free, with an upfront, refundable security deposit of Rs. 1,500 and comes bundled with offers such as life-long free voice calls, texts and 4G data. According to Jio, the security deposit of Rs 1,500 can be refunded after 36 months or 3 years by submitting the phone back to the company.
