Is Apple planning to add Touch ID sensor on the touchscreen itself?
According to a patent filed by Apple, the company might be working on a touchscreen based Touch ID sensor for its devices.
Apple's Touch ID sensor on the iPhones and the latest iPad are currently dependant on the home button where it scans the fingerprint to unlock your device, authenticate accounts or make secure payments. However, Apple might just make it more interesting as a recent patent with the name "Fingerprint Sensor in an Electronic Device” was published which suggests that a touchscreen-based Touch ID will be developed to enable a user to scan a single fingerprint at a specific location on the display itself.
What's more, the patent also mentions that a single fingerprint could be scanned from any single location on the screen and scanning multiple fingers at the same time will also be possible. This means that an iPhone user would just have to put his finger on the touchscreen to easily unlock the phone or an iPad user would put all his fingers on the screen.
While all this sounds really cool, there will be huge constraints. Firstly, including a fingerprint sensor over the display would mean a very high cost of production. Another issue would be to maintain the quality of the display as well as touch response.
What do you think? A full display-enabled Touch ID, aye or nay?
