A popular YouTuber compared the durability of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and the iPhone 15 Pro Max by dropping them.

To make the test as fair as possible, he used robotic arms to drop the phones in a way that's similar to how they might accidentally fall in everyday situations.

After averaging points from all four rounds of the drop test, the Galaxy S23 Ultra won the test despite featuring an aluminum frame.

Apple generated significant buzz with the recent release of the iPhone 15 series. Among the standout improvements in Apple‘s latest ‘Pro’ series iPhones are the introduction of a titanium build and the inclusion of a USB Type-C port. However, recent drop test results of the iPhone 15 Pro Max suggest that the durability of this titanium body does not live up to the high expectations.

A popular YouTuber named PhoneBuff compared the durability of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and the iPhone 15 Pro Max by dropping them. He wanted to see if the iPhone’s stronger titanium body actually makes a difference in real-life situations, reports SamMobile.

To make the test as fair as possible, he used robotic arms to drop the phones in a way that’s similar to how they might accidentally fall in everyday situations, rather than in a controlled lab setting.

In a test where both phones were dropped from waist height onto their backs, the results were surprising. The iPhone, despite its titanium body, ended up with a shattered glass back that had wide cracks all around. On the other hand, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which has an aluminium frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection on both the front and back, only had smaller cracks in two corners. So, in this particular test, the iPhone did not perform as well in terms of durability as the Galaxy S23 Ultra, despite its titanium body.

In the second round of testing, the YouTuber dropped both phones with one of their corners facing down. Interestingly, when the iPhone’s titanium frame hit the concrete slab, it created a spark. Although the titanium frame remained relatively undamaged, the rear glass of the iPhone started to come apart. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s aluminium frame got slightly deformed. However, both phones continued to function properly after this second round of the drop test.

In the third test, both smartphones were dropped with their screens facing down. As a result, the screens of both phones suffered significant cracking, with the Galaxy S23 Ultra performing slightly worse due to its curved screen. However, it’s worth noting that both phones continued to function perfectly, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s in-display fingerprint reader remained functional.

After the final round of drop testing, where both phones were dropped from a greater height, the Galaxy S23 Ultra maintained a similar appearance to how it did after the previous drop test. However, the iPhone 15 Pro Max experienced even more shattered glass on both the front and rear sides, indicating greater damage compared to the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

When the points from all four rounds of the drop test were averaged, the Galaxy S23 Ultra emerged as the winner, despite having an aluminium frame. This result suggests that, at least in this test, there doesn’t seem to be a significant real-world advantage to having a titanium frame.
