iOS 9 code reveals Apple’s plans to revamp FaceTime camera

HIGHLIGHTS

Apple seems to be planning 240fps video capture, flash and 1080p video support on its front cameras.

Apple is reportedly planning to bring some significant changes to its camera features and upgrades with iOS 9. With its developer beta for the next version of iOS out, developers have found code that points towards such upgrades. According to developer Hamza Sood, the code found shows that the front FaceTime camera on the next iPhone will support 1080p video capture, along with support for 240fps video at 720p resolution using the front camera.

In addition, Apple has also added support for a front facing camera flash, along with a panoramic selfie feature. While almost all of these capabilities are available in the rear cameras on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus right now, Apple hasn’t yet taken so much interest in its front camera. It seems the Cupertino, California based technology giant is taking the selfie trend really seriously.

Speaking of the rear camera though, Apple is also adding some upgrades for that one. Earlier reports have suggested a jump from the 8MP resolution to 12MP in the next iPhone(s). There have also been rumours of a multi-sensor setup, sparked by Apple’s acquisition of LinX, a company that works with such multi-sensor cameras to improve low light imaging capabilities.

Apple’s iPhone had led the smartphone camera space for a long time, but the company has recently been outperformed by multiple Android devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S6, Honor 6 Plus and the ZTE Nubia Z9 Mini. All of these devices of course cost less than iPhones as well, and Apple seems to have taken a note of this. The company presumably wants to get back to having the best camera in smartphones today.
