Intex to launch Firefox OS-based sub-2k smartphone in August

Intex confirms launching an ultra low-cost smartphone - Cloud FX - based on Mozilla Firefox OS in August.

Intex has confirmed launching an ultra low-cost smartphone based on Mozilla Firefox OS. Called the Cloud FX, the new Intex smartphone will be priced under Rs. 2,000. Intex has also released some specifications of the smartphone. Intex plans to launch the smartphone in the first week of August.

The Intex Cloud FX will feature dual-SIM support, 3.5-inch display and a 1GHz processor (most likely to be a Spreadtrum chip). The smartphone will sport a 2MP rear camera. For connectivity, it will support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

Intex says the the smartphone will be targeted at first time smartphone users in tier II cities and rural areas and is expected to hit the market first week of August.

Update from Intex comes shortly after Mozilla announced tie up with Indian smartphone companies – Intex and Spice to launch ultra low-cost smartphones in India.

Commenting on the launch, Sanjay Kumar Kalirona, Business Head of the Mobile vertical at Intex said, “Intex association with Mozilla Firefox is a step towards our brand’s promise to offer quality products to our consumers to improve their lives and set industry benchmarks. Intex Cloud FX is aimed at fulfilling the idea of – ‘Smartphone for all’ which will be priced below Rs 2000. This smartphones will be equipped with enhanced phone and browser features of Firefox OS with an access to a rich ecosystem of latest web applications improving users overall smartphone experience at affordable prices”

Mozilla has also revealed its roadmap for the global roll out of its low-cost smartphones.

Two Firefox OS devices showcased at Mozilla’s Mobile Asia Expo booth will be going on sale for the first time this summer: the ZTE Open II and ALCATEL ONETOUCH Fire E.

The ZTE Open II features dual-core processors for better performance. It will be available for purchase in the coming months in Latin America. The ALCATEL ONETOUCH Fire E is powered by a dual-core Snapdragon processors from Qualcomm Technologies Inc. with a 5MP camera and 4.5-inch qHD screen for higher resolution.
