India to have 1.4 billion mobile subscribers by 2020, says report
A report by Ericsson states that 100% of Indian citizens will be mobile users by 2020.
The total number of mobile subscribers in India will reportedly rise to 1.4 billion by 2020, says a report by Ericsson, the Swedish technology and services provider. The report also says that population penetration in the country by mobile services will be 100% and subscribers will migrate to faster data services in the future. The number of users subscribing to GSM/EDGE services is expected to reduce to 510 million by 2020. The number was at 780 million in 2014. The GSM/EDGE usage has been predicted to hit a high in 2015, but will start declining from here on.
More subscribers will be migrating to 3G services. According to the Ericsson report, the number of 3G users were at 120 million in 2014 and it is expected to rise to 620 million in 2020, with a 45% rise in WCDMA/HSPA subscriptions. In addition, the number of 4G LTE users in the country is expected to reach 230 million in the next five years, which will account for 17% of the total user base in India.
As things stand today, most users in India are still using GSM/EDGE technology, which accounts for about 95% of the users. The report said that the time spent on smartphones has increased by 20% since 2012, while the country’s app usage has gone up by 65% in that time. An interesting piece of information in the report says that a major portion of the mobile broadband users in India prefer streaming videos rather than downloading them onto their smartphones. The report puts the number at nearly 65% users.
