India ranks 2nd in the world in smartphone production between 2014-2022

Between the years 2014 and 2022, the shipment of phones made in India has crossed the 2 billion mark. This feat has landed India the title of the second-biggest mobile phone-producing country. Counterpoint Research suggests that the reasons behind this include “huge internal demand, increasing digital literacy and government push”. Various government schemes including Phased Manufacturing Program (PMP), Production Linked Incentive (PLI) and Atma-Nirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) could have possibly pushed towards this achievement too.

 Mobile manufacturers

The Counterpoint Research further reveals that the growth in local manufacturing also shows a steady growth. Earlier, it stood at 14% in 2014 and in 2022 the growth reached a whopping 98%. This statistic indicates that 98% of the phones that were shipped in India were indeed made in India as well.

In recent years, many big names have set up their manufacturing plants in India too. Let’s talk about South Korean brand Samsung for instance. Samsung has its second largest manufacturing facility in the world here in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Its biggest R&D centre is in Bengaluru.

 Mobile manufacturers

Apple on the other hand has a large market in India and is also setting up a manufacturing unit. But it has a few assembly plants. However, Tata will become the company to manufacture iPhones after its deal with Wistron.

Xiaomi is another example. It has multiple manufacturing units in India, including one exclusively for smart TVs. Even Oppo has a manufacturing unit in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
