Ignoring Coma Mode, Apple looks to fix battery issues in iPhone OS 3.1

Updated on 22-Sep-2009
Once again, it seems that Apple has put its own profits above consumer interests.
A few days ago, we reported that users across the Web were facing several issues with the new OS 3.1 update for the iPhone, the most severe of which was the ‘Coma Mode’ where the handset simply froze up and refused to respond. With this happening multiple times for users, one would think that this would be Apple’s highest priority. Yet, the company has decided to focus on fixing a smaller issue – a shortened battery life.
The OS 3.1 update also severely affected the battery life of many users, who posted their complaints on Apple’s official discussion forums. Now, the maker of the world’s most popular mobile phone is contacting the complainants to narrow down and fix the issue.
The iPhone Blog had previously conducted a survey of its readers and 24 per cent said that they are facing battery issues after the update. The site now reports that AppleCare helpdesk is calling users with a series of 11 questions regarding battery life and asking them to install an unsigned profile on their iPhone. This profile logs the battery usage, and upon connecting to a computer via iTunes, sends it to Apple for further research.
Now, as Apple, it obviously makes more sense to fix battery than Coma Mode. If your phone freezes up, you will reset it somehow because you are completely dependent on it. But if your battery runs out, there isn’t anything you can do, is there? And in the latter scenario, Apple and AT&T stand to lose a lot of money in the process.
Call us jaded, but we really didn’t expect any better from a company that is progressively losing its image as one that puts customer experience above all else…
