Huawei's new chipset will combined CPU, GPU and AI functionalities, bringing it up to speed with Qualcomm and Samsung, at least on paper.

Huawei is reportedly going to launch a new application processor soon, which combines CPU, GPU and AI functions. A report from DigiTimes, quoted Richard Yu, CEO, Huawei Consumer Business Group, who said that the processor would be launched in the second half of the year. Although Yu didn’t mention the particulars of the chipset, it should obviously be part of the company’s Kirin line of chipsets. Given the AI capabilities, one expects this to be a flagship class processor from Huawei, powering its next devices. Yu told Digitimes that the company’s EMUI interface has “deep machine learning and smart computing capability”, which is probably what the company is looking to fuel with the new chipset. While Huawei hasn’t announced anything on these lines, one could also expect the company to come up with its own AI assistant, similar to HTC’s Sense Assistant and Samsung’s Bixby. Huawei has made it to the top of the charts amongst global smartphone makers, so it makes sense for the company to provide features others, including Google and Apple, are providing. Yu also said that Huawei’s upcoming Kirin 970 chipset (a flagship chipset, but not the one we talked about above) will likely run on the Huawei Mate 10. According to Yu, the chipset will focus on security and support credit transfers from bank to bank. It is unclear whether this will be in China only, but that is the only place where Huawei Pay is available right now. Further, Yu said that Huawei’s upcoming chips would allow your smartphones to act as car keys, and will work with brands like “BMW, Audi and Porsche”, who are already partnering with the Chinese giant. All this seems in line with Huawei’s aspirations to surpass Apple in the global smartphone market. Yu had told Reuters the same in november last year, saying that the company would “take them (Apple) step-by-step, innovation-by-innovation”. Competing with tier 1 brands like Samsung, Apple, HTC and others has always been part of Huawei’s strategy, although the company does have its Honor line of products as well, for the cheaper market segments. On the other hand, adding AI capabilities to its next chipset brings Huawei’s Kirin line almost at par with the newest chips from Qualcomm and Samsung. While its Kirin chipsets have indeed been used on many of its devices, the chips remains weaker than counterparts, at least from Qualcomm. Even the new Kirin 960, running on the Honor 8 Pro, is behind the Snapdragon 835, although the chip’s overall performance is good still.reportedly going to launch a new application processor soon, which combines CPU, GPU and AI functions.
