The company is planning to release a new series of high-end phones in next year's first half, with 2K-resolution dual-curved AMOLED displays

Huawei is reportedly working on 2K-resolution dual-curved AMOLED display panels. A Weibo post mentions that the company is planning to produce a new series of high-end phones, with output quantity of about 3 million units per month. The series is expected to be released early next year.

Huawei is not the only manufacturer that is interested in making devices with curved displays, after Samsung made it popular with devices like Galaxy S6 Edge/Edge+ and the Galaxy Note Edge. There are rumours of Xiaomi working on a dual-edge curved display too, for its upcoming Mi Edge. It is expected to come with a 5.2-inch Quad HD display. The curved displays are attracting the attention of device makers, and it does look fancy, although it doesn’t seem to offer any practical usage. As for Samsung’s devices, the curved edges on its latest smartphones' displays used for showing notifications, setting Contacts shortcuts, etc. However, it does not really add anything to the phone, except for the price point. Hence, it would be interesting to see the purpose that Huawei, and other interested manufacturers will use the curved edge displays for.

With Huawei and Xiaomi reportedly working on 2K displays, Japanese manufacturer Sony has taken display resolutions to a further step ahead, by unveiling its 4K resolution-smartphone, the Xperia Z5 Premium, at IFA in Berlin. It is the world’s first smartphone to come with a 4K display, but its practical usage is still under question. As per recent reports, the 4k resolution works only for specific apps, and for rest of the time, it is just a 1080p display. To be specific, the display renders at 4K only while viewing high-resolution photos and videos. It also adds a question on whether it makes sense to spend extra money for getting a 4K-resolution display on a 5.5-inch screen size, only for a specific set of apps and tasks.
