The Huawei P20 Pro was the world’s first smartphone with a triple-camera setup on the back. The company worked with iconic German camera brand Leica to develop the cameras. And even in our review, we had noted that it set a benchmark for smartphone cameras. Now, to keep the momentum alive, Huawei might use a quad-camera setup on the successor P30 Pro, according to a new leak on Weibo.
Earlier leaks had confirmed that the less-powerful P30 will keep the triple-camera setup, and for the Pro version, Huawei will add another ToF 3D camera. While the P30 Pro can’t claim to be the world’s first phone with a quad-camera setup (that record is set by the Samsung Galaxy A9), the implementation will be interesting to see.
Only three of the four cameras on the Huawei P30 Pro can be used to take photos. One of the sensors is rumoured to be a telephoto lens with 10X optical zoom. Even the Huawei P30, reports stated, will have a telephoto lens with 5X optical zoom. Both will be a first for a smartphone. The fourth sensor will be ToF (Time of Flight) sensor that might be used for 3D face scanning.
The leaked render on Chinese social-networking site Weibo shows three sensors grouped together vertically along with the LED flash and a laser focus module. The fourth lens is in a separate housing, along the same vertical plane. Ever since the Huawei P10, Huawei has continued to work with Leica to develop its cameras and this time won’t be any different, as the Leica branding can be seen etched on the body.
Earlier renders had revealed the Huawei P30 Pro would switch the wide rectangular notch with a water-drop notch to increase the screen-to-body ratio. Not surprisingly, the P30 Pro will have a gradient colour finish.
Both the Huawei P30 and the Huawei P30 Pro are expected to launch in March, 2019. The phones will be powered by the 7nm Kirin 980 SoC and will run on EMUI 9.0 based on the latest version of Android.
