iOS 6 came out yesterday with 200 new features, prominent among them being the replacement of Google’s Maps service with Apple’s own app. Google has made no official statement yet but the web has gone nuts over a statement made to TechCrunch in which it states:
“We believe Google Maps are the most comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps in the world. Our goal is to make Google Maps available to everyone who wants to use it, regardless of device, browser, or operating system.”
Some estimate that by Christmas this year, Google might come out with it’s own app. Glitches are many and Google had as many when it came out with its own service way back in 2005. Apple is said to have bought 3 companies to make this happen. Those with developer accounts have had plenty of time to go through the maps features and were hoping that in the release version, all these glitches would have been taken care of, but things haven’t turned out that way it seems. Apple has said that it is a cloud based service like Google Maps and things will improve as more and more users contribute.
It seems the Eiffel Tower has had a tragedy, tripped and fell down!
Welcome to Berlin, today’s weather is a cool -89oC
Glitches include wavy roads (a road across Hoover dam takes a plunge into the river beneath), monuments/structure/land bodies misnamed (Coral Sea, Berlin in Antarctica), missing cities (The second biggest city in Sweden, Gothenburg), lack of detail, etc. A common complaint was that Apple’s Map app doesn’t show transit routes either. These are all incidents in parts of the globe that are well covered by Google Maps, we don’t know what people in rural areas are saying.
Here in India, the new Apple iPhone 5 hasn’t launched yet, well not at least till December, we think. And only those with really deep pockets can afford to buy one piece off the grey market for a whopping Rs. 74,000! There are other ways to get Google Maps on your iPhone as illustrated here on IGN.
In the meantime, here is a Tumblr blog where users are uploading glitches of the new app! Try not to laugh too hard.
