Google’s mobile searches overtake desktop queries in 10 countries
HIGHLIGHTS

Though we'd anticipated this a few years ago, Google's confirmation will give a huge push to the mobile platform. Looking at the trends, we can expect the transition happen more rapidly in emerging markets such as India.

Google has officially confirmed its mobile search queries have overtaken desktop queries in at least 10 countries including the US and Japan. It is the first time mobile platform has overtaken the desktop in terms of number of search queries.

“More Google searches take place on mobile devices than on computers in 10 countries including the US and Japan,” says Google in a blog post without elaborating about the development. However, Google confirmed most of the queries came from mobile browser and mobile search apps. It's notable Google does not include tablets in smartphones section – which clearly shows how massive the mobile platform has grown over the years.

As said above, Google hasn't given a lot of details on the transition but it does give a clear picture on how the market is evolving. Dominance of mobile platform in the West is hardly surprising considering availability of high end phones and faster connectivity. But, how soon that will happen in the emerging markets. It's highly it happens sooner.

Back in India, we are witnessing a massive growth of mobile commerce . A lot of e-commerce companies have time and again pointed out receiving a lot of traffic from the mobile platform and that too from smaller cities. Recently, Flipkart-owned Myntra went mobile app only service while rumours are Flipkart will become shut its website and become a mobile-only app by end of this year.

Google's revelation is equally important for the Internet companies and advertisers who need to tweak their strategies for the digital space. We can hope to see more commercial integration into Google apps in near future. Google has already launched a slew of new tools to help advertisers integrate their services to mobile query results.
