Google will stop Android updates for older Nexus devices on these dates
Google’s Nexus support page now lists the dates after which it does not guarantee updates for its devices
Google’s Nexus smartphones have always had a special place amongst Android fans as they are usual the first to be updated to new versions of Google's mobile operating system. However, the update cycle for Nexus smartphones isn't indefinite and the company usually supports a device for about 2 years. However, an update to the Nexus support page will now give users a much clearer idea of how long their device will be supported.
As per the page, Google can no longer guarantee that its latest Nexus devices, the 5X and the 6P, will be supported after September next year. So not only will they receive the Android N update this year, they should get the next update as well. The Nexus 9 and Nexus 6 are listed as being supported till October 2016, and should receive the Android N update if it is launched by then. The Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2013) and the Nexus 10 are no longer guaranteed updates. As for security patches, the company states, “For the longer of 3 years from availability or 18 months when the Google Store last sold the device.”
This information should be pretty useful for those looking to save money and buy a older generation phone. By knowing exactly how long a device is supported by a company, they will be able to make more informed decisions. Hopefully, other manufacturers will take note and let people know exactly how long it would support a particular device.
