Company sources suggest launch of two new Nexus devices on 29th September in San Francisco, devices reportedly made by LG and Huawei
After weeks of anticipation, it seems that Google is all set to launch two Nexus devices in an event on September 29th in San Francisco. Yesterday, CNET cited sources familiar with Google’s plans to report that the company will be unveiling the flagship devices in the aforementioned event.
Earlier leaks have all but confirmed that there will be two Nexus devices, built independently by LG and Huawei. While LG has previously made the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5, this will be Huawei’s maiden Nexus device. They will be the first to run Android v6.0 Marshmallow, before the upgraded OS is rolled out for other devices. The company has traditionally released its Nexus devices in October. With Apple set to announce the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus on 9th September, it is understandable why Google has set a late September launch. While LG’s version is rumoured to sport a more compact design, Huawei will be producing a larger display version of the Nexus, that has so far been called 'Nexus 5 (2015)'.
Codenamed “Bullhead”, LG’s version of the Nexus is tipped to feature a 5.2-inch 1080p display with Snapdragon 808 SoC and 3GB of RAM. Alongside a 13-megapixel primary camera and 5-megapixel front facing one, a fingerprint scanner will also be present. It will be powered by a 2700 mAh battery. Huawei’s Nexus device is rumoured to feature a larger form factor. Leaked images of the bootloader suggests a Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor with 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The device will probably have a 5.7-inch screen with a protruded camera and a fingerprint scanner on the back. Both the devices are expected to feature a USB Type-C port for enhanced connectivity.
LG is quite a veteran with Nexus devices, with this iteration being its third. Huawei, on the other hand, will be building its first Nexus device. It has been moderately successful in its attempts at making premium phablets, Mate 7 and the just released Mate S. After the disappointment that was Motorola-made Nexus 6, Google will be cautious about how it approaches the phablet category. The Mate S is already being touted as Huawei’s answer to the iPhone 6 Plus. The release of a top-drawer Nexus device may increase its credibility among Android faithfuls. Approximate pricing of the new Nexus devices, as of now, remain unknown.
