Google has cleared the air around unlimited Google Photos storage available with its first generation Pixel smartphones. At the Pixel launch last year, Google confirmed that both Pixel phones will get unlimited Google Photos storage for storing high-resolution photos and videos. However, this free Google Photos storage has a time limitation on the newest Pixel phones, forcing original Pixel owners to wonder whether their storage offer is also time-limited.
On the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, the access to unlimited high-resolution storage of photos and videos on Google Photos is limited to 2020. Android Police confirms that photos stored from Pixel 2 series on Google Photos won't be affected after 2020 and will always be available at the original quality. After 2020, the Pixel 2 owners will continue to get unlimited uploads, but will be restricted to high quality and not original quality.
As it is evident, the better deal for Google Photos unlimited storage was with the original Pixel phones. Google Photos is an online platform for storing photos and videos and gives the option to store either in original or high-quality. The high-quality storage is free for life but those opting to store in original quality will need to pay after exhausting a set storage limit.
Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones were announced earlier this month at the company's 'Made By Google' event. The smartphones come with an updated design, hardware and new cameras that received the highest rating from DxOMark Labs. The Google Pixel 2 will go on sale starting November 1 while the Pixel 2 XL will be available from November 15 in India.
