Google Pixel 9 could come with ‘Adaptive Touch’ feature: All you need to know

When it’s raining, using your phone can be tricky because the screen might not respond well to your wet fingers. This happens because the screen can’t pick up your touch properly. Also, if you have a thick or cheap screen protector, it can make things even worse.

To fix this, some phones have settings that make the screen more sensitive to touch. But the new Google Pixel 9 might go even further. It could have a feature called “Adaptive Touch” that automatically adjusts the touch sensitivity based on the conditions.

According to a report by Android Authority, during an investigation into the Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1 release, evidence was discovered hinting that Google might be getting ready to introduce a new setting called “Adaptive Touch” under Settings > Display > Touch sensitivity.

Even though the “Adaptive Touch” setting isn’t visible on the Google Pixel 8 Pro running the latest Android QPR beta, digging into the code reveals some interesting details. It seems that when “Adaptive Touch” is turned on, the touch sensitivity will adjust by itself based on factors like your surroundings, what you’re doing, and even the type of screen protector.

It’s not clear yet what exactly will trigger the automatic adjustment of touch sensitivity. However, one possibility is that wet fingers or a wet screen could be a factor.

Initially, when the code for “Adaptive Touch” was found in Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1, it wasn’t clear whether this feature would be available for existing Pixel devices or if it would be exclusive to upcoming ones like the Google Pixel 8a and Pixel 9. However, recent evidence suggests that this upcoming “Adaptive Touch” feature is specifically linked to Google’s flagship Pixel lineup for 2024. This means it might be introduced with the Pixel 9 and potentially other devices in that series.

Code within the latest Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 release identifies “Adaptive Touch” as a “P24” feature. Google often uses designations like “P2X” internally to refer to its Pixel devices for a particular year.

It’s currently uncertain whether “Adaptive Touch” will be exclusive to the Pixel 9 or if it will eventually become available for older Pixel devices
