Apple hosted its Let Loose event for new iPads at 7:30 PM on May 7. Interestingly, the Google Pixel 8a also rolled out the same day. Right after Apple’s event, Google slid in and launched its affordable smartphone from the Pixel 8 lineup, the Pixel 8a. Google fans were waiting eagerly for the Pixel 8a but the higher price tag did act as a bummer for many. Well, let’s quickly take a look at how Google has upgraded the Pixel 8a when we compare it to its predecessor, the Pixel 7a.
Google says that the Pixel 8a is its most durable A-series smartphone yet. Let’s take a look at what’s new here. First things first, the Pixel 8a offers a 120Hz refresh rate which is improved when we compare it to its predecessor having a 90Hz refresh rate. On the design front, there isn’t much change. However, the Pixel 8a offers slightly rounder curves.

On the performance front, we can see a big upgrade on the Pixel 8a. It is powered by the Tenson G3 chipset, unlike the Tenson G2 on Pixel 7a. In addition to this, the Pixel 8a has two storage options: 128GB and 256GB
Moving on, the Pixel 8a runs on Android 14 and offers up to 7 years of software and security upgrades. Pixel 7a, on the other hand, runs on Android 13 and offers only 5 years of upgrades.
Coming to my favourite part now, cameras. The Pixel 8a has a 64MP primary sensor and an additional 13MP ultrawide lens. We get to see some features that were not present on the Pixel 7a. These include a Super Res Zoom up to 8x (Pixel 7a only had up to 7x), and AI features like Magic Editor and Magic Eraser.
The Pixel 8a even has a bigger 4492mAh battery, 7a has a 4385mAh battery. It supports 24W wired charging and Google promises a better battery life on this.
Lastly, we get four colour options with the Pixel 8a: – Obsidian, Porcelain, Bay, and Aloe.
