Google may have sold over 1 million Pixel smartphones since launch: Report
Google's Pixel Launcher has been downloaded over 1 million times from Play Store, hinting that Google may have sold over a million Pixel phones in eight months
Google may have sold over 1 million units of its Pixel branded smartphones since its launch in October last year. While Google hasn't revealed the sales numbers of its Pixel lineup, the listing of the Pixel Launcher on the Play Store does indicate that the search giant could have sold over a million Pixel devices in the past eight months. According to the listing, the Pixel Launcher (which launched alongside Google's Pixel phones) has been downloaded over 1 million times. It also shows that the Pixel Launcher has an install base of between 1 million and 5 million. The launcher was exclusive to the Pixel and came pre-installed on these smartphones.
ArsTechnica also cites third-party tracking sites like AppBrain that estimate Pixel Launcher's install base to be around 5,00,000. APKMirror, the popular platform for downloading apps and sideloading them on Android smartphones, has more than 1.3 million downloads for Pixel Launcher.
Google has reportedly begun work on second-generation of Pixel smartphones. Most reports suggest that there will be two variants of the device, codenamed 'Walleye' and 'Taimen' that may be manufactured by HTC and LG respectively. The smartphones expected to pack a larger display in a smaller footprint, and come equipped with Qualcomm's updated Snapdragon 836 chipset.
