HIGHLIGHTS

The LG V30 is expected to be the South Korean company's next flagship phone, and it'll support Google's Daydream platform.

At its developer conference this year, the Google I/O, the creator of Android announced that LG’s upcoming flagship smartphone will support Daydream View, Google’s platform for VR. In making the announcement, Google may have inadvertently confirmed the rumoured OLED display panel on the device. Going by LG’s trends for the past year or so, it’s more than likely that the company’s next flagship will be the LG V30.

If you take a look at the Android Compatibility Definition Document (page 75), Google explains there what a handset capable of the Daydream platform should have. Amongst the requirements are two points that require displays to update at no less than 60 Hz in VR mode and have less than 3ms latency for Gray-to-Gray, White-to-Black and Black-to-White switching.

Now, while Google doesn’t specifically mention OLED panels here, those requirements are almost certainly adhered by OLED display panels only. So, in saying that LG’s next flagship will support Daydream View, Google is also confirming that the device will have an OLED display panel on it.

This become even more likely if you take a look at the smartphones that already support the Daydream platform. Devices like the Moto Z (review), Huawei Mate 9 Pro, ZTE Axon 7 and the Pixel smartphones, all have AMOLED display panels. Google even announced that the Galaxy S8 (review) and S8+ will get support for Daydream View through a software update very soon.

Further, Google also requires support for Vulkan APIs, which probably means the LG V30 will also employ the Snapdragon 835 SoC. Of course, the Snapdragon 820 supports Vulkan too, but given that LG doesn’t have a flagship on the newest chipset yet, the 835 is more likely here.
