Gionne partners with Foxconn, Dixon Technologies to make phones in India
Gionee reportedly plans to invest $50 million in India over a period of 3 years. The company also has plans to invest in India specific R&D.
Gionee has announced that it is partnering with Foxconn and Dixon Technologies for making phones in India. The company reportedly plans to invest $50 million (approx. Rs. 300 crore) in India over a period of three years. Foxconn will be making the phones for Gionee at its facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, while Dixon Technologies will be doing it from Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Both the facilities have a cumulative production capacity of about 1.2 million units.
The company has said that Foxconn will make the Gionee P and F series smartphones, while Dixon makes other devices, including feature phones. In a report by PTI, Arvind Vohra, Country CEO & MD, Gionee India said that the commercial production will start from October 16 at both the facilities. He also added, “Make in India as an initiative gives an opportunity to not only take Gionee as a brand ahead but also to be actively able to participate in the growth of our economy through various touch points. We are happy to have partnered with the best in the business including Foxconn and Dixon and sure that this step will prove to be instrumental in the brand’s future."
Gionee is also focusing on software improvements, around its Amigo UI. The company plans to increase investment in R&D, to make its Amigo UI better for the Indian market. In a recent interation with the press, William Lu, President, Gionee said, “India market is second home market to Gionee after China and the investment in India manufacturing is just another step in a line up of much more to come for the Indian market and customers."
Many companies including Xiaomi, Huawei, Lenovo and Motorola have announced their support for the Make in India initiative.
