Gionee E8 to launch in India on October 8, may sell online only
HIGHLIGHTS

The flagship phablet features a 6-inch WQHD display, 23-megapixel camera, and fingerprint scanner, powered by a MediaTek Helio X10 SoC and 3GB of RAM.

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Gionee is expected to launch the E8 smartphone soon. Press invites sent out by Gionee indicates that the company is going to launch the Elife E8 in India at an event in New Delhi on October 8. The flagship was announced in China in June. The teaser for the event also hints at the company making its “big entry into e-commerce.”

Although not explicitly mentioned on the invite, Gionee is widely expected to launch the E8 smartphone on Thursday. The main highlight of the phone is its 24-megapixel primary camera featuring optical image stabilisation, phase detection autofocus, and true tone flash. There is also an 8-megapixel front camera. The phone is powered by a 2GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio X10 (MTK6795) SoC with PowerVR 6200 GPU and 3GB of RAM. There is 64GB of internal memory and a 3520mAh battery with fast charging support. The Gionee Elife E8 has a 6-inch WQHD Super AMOLED display with a 2560×1440 resolution, and a pixel density of 490ppi. A fingerprint scanner is also present on the back, placed below the camera. It has 4G connectivity with dual-SIM support as well as NFC and Bluetooth. The phone runs a custom Amigo 3.1 UI layered on top of Android v5.1 Lollipop.

The invite also reads, “A new phone launch and a big entry into e-commerce.” It might be indicative of Gionee’s plans to sell the smartphone exclusively through online channels. Pricing details about the phone are yet to emerge. The Gionee E8 is priced at CNY 3,999 in China, which is roughly equivalent to Rs. 41,000. It will be facing stiff competition from the recently launched Huawei Nexus 6P and other similarly specced flagship devices, assuming that it costs around the above mentioned price point here.

Gionee recently announced its partnership with Foxconn and Dixon Technologies to manufacture their devices in India, under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Foxconn will be manufacturing the P and F series of smartphones at its facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The rest of the phones are supposed to be made by Dixon Technologies at Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Commercial production is slated to commence from October 16. So, there is a possibility that the Elife E8 may be priced lower than what it costs in China.
