Samsung’s next flagship might also come with a Cat. 12 LTE modem chip on both the Snapdragon 820 and Exynos 8890 variants

If rumours are to be believed, Samsung’s upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S7 will come equipped with a Cat. 12 LTE modem chip, a first among smartphones. Theoretically, it is capable of 600Mbps downlink and 100Mbps uplink speeds. Samsung has reportedly set a February 2016 release date for the smartphone.

A new report coming in from Korea has cited sources close to the company to suggest that Samsung will release the Galaxy S7 in February 2016. Earlier, the device was being tipped for a January launch. Samsung is expected to release two separate versions of the Galaxy S7, powered by a Snapdragon 820 and an Exynos 8890 chipset. The report also states that the device is set to become the world’s first smartphone to come with a Cat. 12 LTE chip. Previously, Qualcomm announced that the Snapdragon 820 chipset will house its X12 LTE modem offering downlink speeds up to 600Mbps, and uplink speeds of upto 150Mbps.

There have also been rumours of the Galaxy S7 sporting a magnesium alloy frame with a glass back. It may also pack a SABRE 9018AQ2M audio chip by ESS. Apart from the Snapdragon 820 version, Samsung might also release a variant powered by the Exynos 8890 SoC. Giving credence to the rumours is a listing on GeekBench with the device name Samsung LUCKY-LTE. The Galaxy S7 will most likely be outfitted with Samsung’s own ISOCELL 20-megapixel camera sensor. However, recent rumours suggest that the company is trying to source Sony’s IMX300 image sensor, which might find its way into some models of the device. Since the IMX300 has a resolution of 23-megapixels, Samsung will reportedly use compression algorithms to keep the images at 20MP. The device is also expected to house an USB Type-C port.

It was learnt that Samsung had filed patents for its own pressure sensitive display technology, leading many to speculate that the Galaxy S7 may come with it. The phone is expected to run Android Marshmallow out-of-the-box. Given the slight variation in the speculated release timeline of the device, it is entirely possible that Samsung announces it in January, while the units start shipping out in February.
