Apple has sold over 5 million units of the iPhone 5. This was announced in a statement released today by Apple. This comes just days after the launch on 21st September.
The iPhone 5 is currently available in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the U.K. It will be available in 22 more countries on September 28. The countries are – Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. The same announcement also informs that the iPhone 5 will be available in another 100 countries by the end of 2012.
“Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.”
We expect the iPhone 5 to arrive in India sometime late October or early November this year, targeting the festive season shopping spree. The iPhone 5 is available in the U.S. for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 16GB model and $299 (US) for the 32GB model and $399 (US) for the 64GB model. However, do remember that these are prices through AT&T, Sprint and Verizon with a two-year contract, with a specific iPhone tariff (rental and usage charges). The prices of the iPhone 5, when it arrives in India, will be significantly higher, and it is very unlikely that mobile service providers in India will offer a similar tariff structure.
